Ms. Guido is now M. Guido MS
I haven't posted in quite a long time so I'm just going to recap the highlights.
-I love my job, being a forensic scientist is cool.
-I have officially graduated, have received my diploma and am officially Marie Guido, Master of Science in Forensic Molecular Biology.
-I now own a townhouse, it's a nice place and everyone is welcome to come visit me.
-Zac is still the best boyfriend ever.
-I'm looking forward to a bunch of weekend trips to various places in the upcoming weeks, if you'd like me to come visit you let me know!
-Living alone is both good and strange, I'm still getting used to it.
-I'm hoping to get in shape and lose some weight, little by little I think I can do it.
-I feel like I'm losing touch with people, if I haven't talked to you in a few months drop me a line and I'll call you sometime.
-I'm still trying to get into a better sleep cycle for work.

Overall things are going really well in my life :-) I'm looking forward to a lot of exciting things in the near future and hopefully I'll keep you all better updated about it here.

    Ms. Guido Get a Job
I know I haven't posted in a really long time but today is worth posting about. I have taken a job with the Center for Forensic Science in Syracuse, I'm going to start on December 11 if I can sort out my final exam schedule to be done before that. I'm extremely excited, these people seem really nice and the lab is amazing as far as I can see. It's a nice small lab too but with nice facilities. I'll post more later on but I figured this was a good way to let people know. YAY!!!! I'm very happy about the whole thing.

    Ms. Guido Is Busy
So an amazing amount of things have all happened at once in my life. First of all the internship is going very well - I've finished the first of three parts that I was hoping to complete and I'm a little less then halfway done with the second. Unfortunately I've also been somewhat sick during this time period. I had strep throat and now a mild sinus infection that's probably a result of not getting the strep looked at right away. So I was on amoxycillin for the strep [which should be gone by now] but the doctor switched me over to super-amoxycillin to get rid of the sinus infection. I've been on antibiotics for 13 days now with a few more to come but I am feeling a lot better and nothing contagious left :-)
I found a roommate for the fall at my new apartment. From the phone calls we've been exchanging I think we're going to hit it off well. She seems to have a personality and mentality that she and I will mesh well.
The big change that's happened is that last Tuesday I got a call from the investigator who's doing my background check for the forensic scientist job up in Albany. And apparently there's a deadline on it of July 4th [which is not going to happen] but I decided that it would be worth it to fly back up to Buffalo to get my interview and polygraph done. This way by July 3rd my part of the background check is done and the investigator should be able to finish it up a few days later. I'm really hoping that the rush on the background check means that there will be a job offering in the works.
The other ramification of this being that I'm coming up to Hitball in Candor and get to see a bunch of people!!! This makes me quite happy. This would have been the first WHC that I missed since I met Dan, so despite the craziness of trip it's so worth it. Added bonus Melinda and Mike will be there too and they'll get to meet Zac for the first time.
Overall things are falling into place and I'm just hanging on and enjoying the ride.

    Ms. Guido Helps with Honey
So today was my second day in the lab and it was good. I got sent off on my own and despite being painfully slow with things and asking a bunch of questions I think I did well. I'm starting to feel more comfortable with doing things on my own and I'm sure I'll come up to speed within the week. The technician has been especially nice to me, I kept running to her with questions today and she was always helpful. I did get backed up due to people being in the space I needed to be working in so I was there until 5:30 but it all worked out.

By the time I got back to the house my aunt, uncle, cousin and her husband were ankle deep in honey. My cousin and her husband have a bee hive and this is the first time they're collecting honey from it - it was a really cool process to watch. Plus the rewards are sweet ;-) And since I helped I get to have a jar of honey for myself - the stuff is incredibly good. They got something like 30 mason jars full of the stuff from one 'super' or honey hive. They may even have more to harvest before I leave.

Overall things are good here - but very busy, this is the first chance I've had all day to sit. So if you want to get in touch with me try my cell phone, if you leave a message I will get back to you eventually.

Additionally I've eliminated one of the potential roommates, so three more people to talk to before I make a decision. I love being able to say *my* apartment. And now to call people back and then collapse in a heap so that I'm somewhat awake for work tomorrow.

    Ms. Guido From Florida
I haven't updated in forever and a lot has happened in that time. But right now I'm in St. Augustine Beach, Florida at my Aunt Grace and Uncle Al's place. I start my internship tomorrow and I'm really excited. I live about an hour away from the lab I'll be working in, but that's ok I'll deal. I've settled in quite nicely but I am glad that my mom drove down with me - it was nice to spend time with her as well as switch on/off driving.
In other news I'm on a secondary list for the job I interviewed for. I think I've got a decent shot at the job since they've started my background check and they seemed encouraging when they talked to me on the phone. I made it through my CORE exam [the comprehensive exam I had to take at the end of the school year]. And Zac and his roommates survived me living there for a week. It was a nice time actually. I have paid my first month's rent for my new apartment in Albany and have four potential roommates from the incoming class of forensic students. So that's exciting.
Overall I'm going well and I'll update in more detail over the next week or so. If you really want to talk to me you should call [after 5pm] since I may not be on aim for a bit in here. In fact I encourage you to call me - if you are in fact my friend and not a stranger who's happen to come upon my livejournal.
And now to get ready for bed so that I will actually wake up in enough time to be early to work.

Ms. Guido Interviews for a Job
On Tuesday I had my interview for a forensic scientist position at the state police Forensic Investigative Center in Albany. I was really nervous until Monday night when I did well testifying in mock trial, that calmed me down some. So after class on Tuesday I came back to my apartment, got all dressed up [a suit, makeup and heels] and headed over. And I think the interview went really well! Once I got into a flow of talking I was relatively relaxed and I don't think I screwed up any of the technical questions, though I could have given better answers. So now it's all just a waiting game, seeing how things pan out and crossing my fingers. Even if I don't get a job in this round of hiring I've been told that there are going to be quite a few more positions opening up in the next year so I'm hopeful.

Ms. Guido Has Not Fallen Off the Face of the Earth
I haven't updated in forever so here's a quick review of the things that have happened lately and might be of interest to people other then me.
I've moved out of my old apartment to the apartment next door - much nicer people, a nice relaxed atmosphere.
I had a spectacular time in Myrtle Beach with my mom, aunt, uncle and Zac. Everyone got along well and it was just a comfortable vacation. Spent half the time with family and few days at the end with just Zac. It was nice to get back down there, I had been going down twice a year from fourth grade to the first year of college basically and this was the first chance I've had to get back down. And not inconsequential in all of this is that it made me more relaxed then I've been in a few months. If anyone wants pictures [I have some really nice ones] let me know.
I have an interview for a job at the State Police Forensic Investigative Center in Albany on May 2nd! I am extremely excited about it and a bit nervous. I got a call yesterday saying that the entire hiring process is being expedited and that I should be ready to stay after the interview to start the background check process - including a urine test and reference information. To all of you whom have ever lived with me, near me, or are considered a good friend this is your official warning that someone from the State Police may come around asking about me. Just be honest and be happy because if it's gets that far it means I've got the job :-) If I get the job I'll be starting sometime this summer - they're looking to get people on-line as soon as possible. Even if I don't get the job it's good experience, plus there's scuttlebutt about more rounds of hiring in the near future.
My internship in Jacksonville, Florida is firming up. I actually have a good idea of what my project will entail now. I should be down there for all of June and part of July. It'll be an interesting time between a full time research internship in a working private forensic lab and living with some of the more out there members of my family. Anyone who'll be down in that area at that time is welcome to come by and hang out.
That's the brief overview. Other then that I'll I'm doing here is trying to finish up the rest of my work for the year. Well that and trying to catch up on sleep, but that's just a constant in life.

    Ms. Guido's Adventures in Seattle
So I'm back from Seattle and the AAFS conference, still kind of jetlagged. The trip was quite nice with two major exceptions - I got sick halfway thru and airplane troubles on the way back. But I'm getting ahead of myself.

The trip started out with a drive down to LaGuardia with Katherine, her son, Melissa and her two dogs. The dogs were unexpected, but they only gave my allergies minor problems. We met up with Alanna at the gate and had a nice uneventful flight-layover-flight. I got sucked into Su Doku and finished up some of my work. The hotel was really nice and they had a shuttle service to anywhere in the city. First thing Tuesday we headed up to the Convention Center, checked in and proceeded to roam the city since the only things going were business meetings. We ended up wandering around the Public Market area - the place where they toss the fish. I found that I really liked Seattle, it ranks right up there with Toronto. Had dinner at a seafood restaurant that a few people had recommended and with good reason, they had excellent food.

The next day was the first things open to all sections - the exhibition hall, a poster session and then an afternoon session. Everything was interesting though I wish I had gone to the exhibition hall first since they were giving away all kinds of free stuff. I did end up with a very nice invisible ink pen with a special light to make the ink glow. We ended up going out to a pub for dinner with our adviser Don - it was a funny time. Unfortunately this is where my week started to slide, I ended up getting sick. Like throwing up, stomach cramps, no sleep sick. Not fun. I tried to go to the things on Thursday [since this was the day a majority of the things I wanted to see was], but I just couldn't deal with it. I ended up going back to the hotel early on in the day and sleeping/recooping. I was okay by Friday but not exactly 100%. Friday did have a lot of interesting sessions, I stayed for the whole day even though the rest of the girls I came with didn't. I won't bore you guys with most of it but I did sit in on some of the pathology sessions and one I just have to share - a suicide by electric chainsaw. If you want more details just let me know and I'll share but I don't want to gross out everyone here.

After the day's sessions we all met up at a piano bar which was a lot of fun. Katherine and I then dragged the others back to the Convention Center for the evening session that featured one of our professors. It was interesting but it would have been nice if it was earlier in the evening. We then headed back out to the piano bar, had some food and got into a conversation with a drunken woman who apparently loves CSI. The rest is traveling stories.

The first flight was fine but on the second flight they messed up and double booked the seat I was in. And as the flight was completely booked this resulted in my waiting around for them to tell me if I could even get a seat on the flight. It took them awhile to figure it out but I did get on the flight. The further woes with ATA occurred once we got to LaGuardia - apparently half of the plane's luggage didn't make it on the plane with us. Making it more complicated we ended up having to wait for a baggage claim form as they had run out. It worked out ok though as by the time we had filled out the forms and gotten Melissa's dogs we headed back to LaGuardia and were able to pick up half of our luggage that had arrived with the next flight. And Alanna picked up the rest of it the next day. The only really bad thing was that we ended up getting into Albany around 3 am.

Overall it was a really nice trip, I just need a few days to recover and let it all sink in.

    Ms. Guido Goes to Seattle
I'm in Seattle!!!!! After a long but decently nice flight I made it to Seattle. So far there haven't been too many events to attend and I've had some snafus with registration and such. But I have high hopes for the coming days. The upside of the day was walking around downtown Seattle - it was a lot of fun. The four of us have decided that since a bunch of other colleges have alumni/student receptions that we're going to shanghai Dr. Orokos and go out for a drink in an informal reception. Maybe there'll even be some alumni we don't know about here who will join in. I won't have internet access again until I get back to Albany so the next post will have all the details about the rest of the conference.

    Ms. Guido Goes Bowling
As my subject title implies I went bowling last night. It was an incredibly fun time. I had just gotten back from the gym and was in kind of a down mood - I was wishing I was back in Rochester where I almost always have people I can just hang out with no matter the time. When out of the blue Danielle [from the next building over] ims and asks if I want to go out late night bowling with a bunch of people. Jenny [friend from my program and Danielle's roommate] followed that up with details on the phone and after inviting Zac we headed out for midnight bowling. There were a bunch of us and it was a lot of fun, despite the very loud music, disco lights and a lane that malfunctioned a few times. Plus it was $15 for shoe rental and unlimited games from 11pm to 2am. We stayed till 2. It was just exactly what I was looking for in terms of something to do on a Saturday night - friends, fun and going out.
Today I'm turning domestic and cooking for a good part of the day. I'm going to attempt to make veggie lasagna and cut up a bunch of veggies so that I can just have them around to use in things. I may try to tackle some reading and cleaning. But basically I'm just in a good mood about things now.

    Ms. Guido Learns Something New
On my way home from class today I found out what sound a squirrel makes. It's a hybrid of a small duck and a cat, it was a kind of honking sound with interspersed hissing. It was really interesting and not what I would have expected. I think the squirrel was trying to defend his tree from the passing people and cars.
Weird couple of days, but things are going well.

Ms. Guido Is So Not A Ninja
I was walking around in my boots today and I realized that they make about the same noise as low heels, the kind that professional women wear. As such I would not be able to sneak up on anyone and as such I am sooooooo not a ninja.

I've finished up my second day of classes now and the semester seems to be shaping up quite well. Some of my classes are redundant and I have a very hard time stomaching one professor in particular, but overall they seem interesting. Forensic lab is going to be amazingly awesome, we're getting simulated casework complete with 'evidence'. For each case we're getting clothing spiked with actual bodily fluids and reference samples AND we're going to get to use the work we've done in a mock trial at the end of the semester. And since we're now using the new lab we'll be able to use the lab for side projects, like typing ourselves. I'm definitely looking forward to that starting tomorrow.

Was out of sorts yesterday, but today I'm doing quite well. Probably something to do with the water - my brita filter needs replacing. Zac coming over for dinner *might* have helped too. Is it strange that the thought of bloody clothing cheers me up?

Ms. Guido Gets Her Baby Back
I picked up my car today! It was ready a full 2 days before I was expecting it and it feels good to have my baby back all in one piece. I am free of the slow responding, soft pedaled, smokey loaner car. I love my car and it feels good to have her back, especially since I've got some driving coming up in the near future. Thursday I'm heading up to Rochester for the day and sometime on Friday I'm driving back to Albany. [Important side note - this means that on Friday I'll get to see my boyfriend for the first time in a month.] The next big trip after that will probably be to Dobb's Ferry to visit Mike and Melinda, with a short jaunt back to Rochester the weekend of February 11th for my brother's play. In any event yay for my car!

Ms. Guido Is Introspective In A Good Way
I love my friends. I value my friendships because there was a time when I didn't have many, or to be truthful any. So the friendships I have now are very precious to me and every once in awhile I'm reminded of this. Each of my friends are unique and accordingly each friendship has unique qualities to it; intricacies I couldn't begin to describe even to myself. But I would like to say this to all who read this, you'll probably hear it again straight from me when I talk to you, Thank you for being my friend because it's a friendship I value.
Amazing what a quiet moment and a good mood can do for a person. But not nearly as much as a noisy moment with good friends can do for a person.

    Ms. Guido Finally Updates
I know I've been bad about posting livejournal entries but I'm going to make an effort again and we'll see how it goes. I'm going to skip over everything but the highlights of what's been going on/will be going on in my life, if you want details you'll just have to call me.
    Highlights in no particular order
-Happy New Year everyone [late as usual but it's the thought that counts]
-congratulations to Mike and Melinda on their engagement!
-the holidays were very nice, some of the best family gatherings in recent memory for me
-got to see Kaeti in Rochester a bunch around the New Year
-got into a minor accident on the way back from Rochester, nobody was hurt but my car's going to be in the shop until the 19th
-bullet point above precludes any trips for the rest of my break
-I go back to Albany either the 19th or 20th with a stopover in Rochester to see people
-I'm going to Seattle for a forensics conference in February
-I'm going to Jacksonville for an internship during the summer, tentatively from the second week in June to the first week in August
-I got a 3.44 for the fall semester and I'm officially a part of the program now, which is nice
-sometime after I get back to Albany I'm dragging Kaeti with me to NYC so that I can see Melinda and jump up and down in girly celebration [see bullet point about her engagement], plus look at dresses
-I'm pleased with my personal life ;-)
-I'm starting to make scary grown-up decisions, but on the upside I think I'm going to end up with a good job
-I'm going to head to Myrtle Beach over spring break and I'll get to see my favorite relatives for the first time in quite awhile [I love my Aunt Pat and Uncle Larry]

I'm probably forgetting a bunch of stuff but at least I'm posting again.

    Ms. Guido Names Her Car
So for some reason the other day I was thinking about what my car should be called. It's gone through several incarnations involving the fact that it's a Subaru, it's sapphire blue color and other such things. In my head I just call her "My Baby", like my last car. But then I was looking at people's license plates and realized that things like CZY make me think of the car as Crazy. So then I got to thinking about the letters on my car's license plate - DGD - and into my head came the perfect acronym. So my car for better or worse is now the Dean Green Destroyer, unless someone else can come with a better name. I'll open this up to everyone who reads my livejournal - what should I name my car?

    Ms. Guido Summarizes
I haven't posted in almost a month so I figured I'd summarize the highpoints and lowlights, in approximate chronological order.

-I had 10/12 and 10/13 off for undisclosed reasons [Yom Kippur]
-went up to Rochester that weekend, saw some people, had a good time
-got behind and caught up on work several times
-had my last current literature in forensic biology class and presentation
-started tutoring a football player in human population genetics [still not sure how I got myself into that one]
-got extremely stressed out finishing my biotech lab notebook [still need to clean up slightly]
    -went out for Taco Bell
-got slightly stressed out studying for my biotech midterm [did better then average]
-had a distinct lack of sleep due to the above mentioned stressing out
-got extremely stressed out by my cell bio midterm
-reaffirmed my belief that my mere presence causes computers to do things that stumps engineers and computer techies alike
-subsequently did well on said cell bio midterm [I think]
-went up to Rochester [for the 3rd time in October] to see the opening night of my brother's play
-was completely amazed by my brother's performance [when he walked onto the stage I didn't recognize him for a minute]
-talked my boyfriend through probably the worst week ever
-got back to Albany about an hour and a half after Zac left
-realized how much I hate insomnia
-realized how much I love chocolate ice cream sundaes
-went to a Halloween party dressed as a dominatrix
-felt an extreme lack of stress heading up to my human population genetics midterm [to the point of basically taking the night off the day before the test]
-felt confident that I did well if not perfect on above mentioned midterm
-started talking to myself in the car
-completed and turned in my application for a summer internship with the FBI
-decompressed because the last of my midterms was over and I didn't bomb any of them
-realized just how ridiculous the statement 'habituate to stress' is
-finally started my Brandeis Brief on the constitutionality of the techniques of DNAPrint [determining the ethnicity of an unknown suspect from DNA]
-realized how lucky I am to have the friends I do

The other day I was pleasantly surprised - Zac made me a chocolate cheesecake! Made it for me, not bought it, made it. I awarded him 12 Hagen Daaz points.
Also as a side note for those people in Rochester currently - I'm going to be up a lot this month. I think I'll be up every weekend except for Meliora weekend - including the weekend starting tomorrow. I don't have class again until Thursday [I love state schools] so I'm not actually sure how long I'll be around but at least until Sunday. Give me a call if you want to get together!
